Let Me Lie Synopsis

Note: This review is spoiler-free!

The police say it was suicide.
Anna says it was murder.
They’re both wrong.

One year ago, Caroline Johnson chose to end her life brutally: a shocking suicide planned to match that of her husband just months before. Their daughter, Anna, has struggled to come to terms with their loss ever since.

Now with a young baby of her own, Anna misses her mother more than ever and starts to question her parents’ deaths. But by digging up their past, she’ll put her future in danger. Sometimes it’s safer to let things lie…

Why did I pick it?

I have loved some of Clare Mackintosh’s previous books so when this one was announced and I read the synopsis, I knew it was one I had to try.

What I loved about it

The suspense and twists in this book are crazy. It’s rare these days that a book has me completely hooked in that way. I got to the main plot twist early one morning on the way to work. I was late to work that day as I just had to stay sat in my car listening to more just to get my head straight again.

Clare Mackintosh is great at creating flawed characters that you love to hate. Whether they are the “bad guys” or not you really feel for them and their experiences. Characters in her books are never black and white, they linger in the grey areas where people are “bad” because of their life choices and experiences and I love that.

When you initially start the book you may be forgiven for thinking it’s a little far fetched and not what you expected. All I shall say is stick with it, it’s not what you think!

What I loathed about it

The ending. Not exactly loathed but it didn’t give much clarity, it’s open to interpretation as to what actually happens. Now I’m sure that was the intention but for me I need it spelling out after all the twists and turns in the rest of the book.

Ok so it’s not my favourite book from Clare Mackintosh but it is well worth investing time in. Let Me Lie is a book full of twists and turns that even for a seasoned reader of similar novels will enjoy as it will keep you guessing until the very end.
