Why did I pick it?

I was starting to get really bored of reading the same old YA fantasy story over and over again. So when the opportunity to try something different presented itself I thought why the hell not!

What I loved about it

This is a short book at only 384 pages but wow did it pack a PUNCH! From the moment the first chapter opened things got moving very quickly. You didn’t even need a lot of world-building in the first instance, just ACTION and it delivered in spades.

I loved how the book was broken up firstly into the location and then once they reach Piloria, into days. It really helped me get a feeling for the passing of time, more books could benefit from this method, especially some of those pushing 800+ pages!

The lack of romance, there I said it! Yes, ok, it’s there in the background, but it’s not the main plot point and more importantly, it’s not the instalove kind I’ve come in loath in YA recently, so…yay!

What I loathed about it

Nothing to really loath other than I wanted more! I wanted more danger, more dinosaurs, more EVERYTHING. This book has been billed as the Hunger Games meets Jurrasic Park, which I think is a fair assessment. But whilst in the Hunger Games you have the feeling of true danger and suspense I didn’t always feel that here…. like I said, more danger please!

Thoughts

I predict dinos will be one of the next big things in YA fantasy fiction and I have to say, I’m looking forward to it!
